I have a very specific way of playing Fallout games, and I don’t think I’m alone. I need to hack every computer, pick every lock, and persuade everyone I come across. If I’m going to devote dozens, if not hundreds of hours to a game, I want to keep as many options open for as long as I can.
For Fallout 4, I thought I'd try something different: a no-nonsense character with no charisma or intelligence — someone who can barely aim a gun but is lethal with a baseball bat. I thought it would be fun to see a different side of the game, but I was very, very wrong: not only was Fallout 4 more tedious, but parts of the game felt too challenging to even move past. Yes, you can play the game however you want, but some preplanning is downright essential.
So now, 20 hours into one journey, I’m starting over with all the lessons I have learned from that first experience, and I’m already having way more fun. Here’s everything I wish I knew before starting Fallout 4.
Some stats are more SPECIAL than others
Your character is defined by SPECIAL: base stats representing Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck that you choose at the beginning of the game. Unlike past Fallout titles, there is no separate collection of specific skills to spend points on. Instead, when you level up, you can choose to unlock certain perks.
The only way to pick more advanced locks is to spend points on the Locksmith perk — ditto for unlocking computers and the Hacker perk. To get to these perks, you’ll need to have at least four points each in the Perception and Intelligence stats, respectively. Also, I can’t stress this enough: you’ll want to get Charisma as high as possible, as soon as possible. Unlike past Fallout games, there are no points to spend on skills; bartering and persuasion are all based on your Charisma stat plus some arbitrary dice roll (be sure to save often). You don’t have to use it, but you will want the option.
… but stats can quickly be improved
Leveling up grants you one point to spend on the (rather adorable) perk chart — up to and including the base stats themselves. Some perks are essential for accessing parts of the game (i.e. picking locks or building certain items). Others are there just to better your combat and survival prowess. Network channel scanner mac. We found ourselves more often than not spending money toward our base SPECIAL stats and were better for it.
And as with past Fallout games, you can temporarily boost your stats with drugs and special apparel.
Use a generic or 'sci-fi' name
It makes talking to the robot more fun. Cheers!
Pick one workshop and call that home
Very early on you’ll have access to two different workshop areas (Sanctuary and Red Rocket gas station). These are great places for storing all the junk you’ve accumulated, but they don’t transfer from one to the other without you physically moving them. So when starting out, it’s best to just choose one of locations and plan on fast traveling back in between missions to drop off junk and do general maintenance.
And always drop off junk at a workshop — there’s no point holding onto it and taking up space.
Always build mods and cook when you can
There's a lot of junk in post-apocalyptic Boston, but it all falls into specific categories. Ultimately, a toaster is no different than a coffee pot — both are materials that can be used as a steel substitute for building other cool things. Every mission is a chance to grab literally hundreds of new materials and raw (read: irradiated) meat, which can be grilled / roasted to safe levels of consumption. So whenever you have a chance, it’s best to just make all the various mods and cook all the food you can. It’s also an easy way to gain experience.
Scrapping is more important than selling
Sure, some shops have unique items, but you’ll really only spend money on ammunition (rarely needed, but it came in handy). It’s better to have extra material for weapon and armor mods (as well as buildings and decorations for your various homes).
Clothing matters
There is a huge number of ways to mix and match apparel in this game. Arms, legs, chest, head, and long underwear can all be intermixed and boost both armor and various stats. (The right kind of hat will add multiple points to Charisma, for example.) Many armor pieces can also be modified to improve effectiveness. Better still, you can fairly easily add pockets and increase the overall amount you’re able to carry.
Radiation matters, too
In past Fallout games, you could get a dose of radiation and more or less ignore it. That's decidedly not the case here: radiation will decrease your maximum health (shown via a pesky red line on your health bar) until you heal yourself. And radiation is everywhere, up to and including the very first low-level creatures you encounter in the game. So cook raw meat before ingestion, be mindful of the radiation protection some clothing provides, and be sure to have some RadAway / Rad-X medicine handy at all times.
Power armor is fun but it’s rarely essential
The post-apocalypse’s de facto super suit is more ubiquitous in Fallout 4, but after you get your first suit, it’s perfectly fine to drop it off at your favorite workshop and save it for special occasions. Power armor runs on energy, which at first isn’t easy to come by — and if it runs out, you pretty much have to leave the suit wherever you took your last step. It’s easy enough to find enough parts to replace the suit if you need to, but we found it better just to wander around without it. Besides, it clutters up the HUD quite heavily.
Companions won’t affect the narrative but they will make the world less lonely
You’ll have quite a few options for travel buddies, starting with the adorable dogmeat. It honestly doesn’t matter who you take along in missions but each one does have fun quirks that add to the color of the game (a certain reporter, for example, might start randomly going around asking other questions). They also serve as great pack mules for when you need to carry more than your own weight in weapons, armor, and junk.
Feel free to focus on the main quest (to a point)
Fallout 4’s main quest is way more compelling than past games in the series. There will come certain moments where certain decisions will cut off access to other quests (say, hypothetically, picking one side or another in a heated debate), but for the most part, you can get far into the main quest before needing to check out others. The sides quests are fun (some of them at least), and it's worth exploring the map as much as you can, but the game will continue on after the main storyline is over, letting you revisit most (but not all) of your mission backlog.
If nothing else, we’d suggest barreling through to the first 'big' city (you’ll know it when you get to it) so you have access to more shops.
Save. Often.
Persuasion checks have an element of chance, some conversation branches have unintended consequences, and bugs are painfully prevalent. You’ll need the peace of mind / backup plan. Eventually the elevator comes for us all.

How To Enable Fallout 4 ModsHow to enable modding
That's it, you're ready to get modding! :)
Nexus Mod Manager
Manually installing mods can be tricky and there is always some risk of damaging your game installation. The Nexus Mod Manager makes this process safer and easier by providing users with an easy way to download, install, enable, disable, and remove Fallout 4 mods, all from a centralized interface.
NMM is now a community project, and its development /support has been moved to GitHub:
- Releases (Downloads)
- Issues
How To Manually Install Fallout 4 ModsArchive Extractors
You will need an archive extractor such as 7zip, WinRar, or other solution.
Finding Your Data Folder
This is where you will install Fallout 4 modification files.
You have now found your data folder. Remember this location.
Installing Loose files
'Loose files' refers to a mod who’s content files are separate, individually contained within an archive that must be extracted to your data folder.
That’s it! You should now be able to load the game and see the installed mod in action.
Installing Plugins
Plugins are mods that are packaged as self-contained ESP files (.esp). These plugins must be extracted to your data folder and unlike loose files, must be enabled via the plugins.txt file.
After installation, plugins must be enabled before they will be active in-game.
Enabling Plugins
Plugins, unlike loose files, must be enabled in Fallout 4 by adding them to your plugins.txt file before they are active in-game.
If you enabled modding correctly as described in the 'How to Enable Fallout 4 mod support' section at the top of this page, the mod (ESP file) you are installing will be now listed in this file, after the Fallout 4 launcher is run. If not, you may try manually add the mod to this list as a whole filename with extension (ie. yourmod.esp).
After confirming the ESP file is listed in your plugins.txt file, you are done! You should now be able to see the mod you installed active in-game.
How To Manually Uninstall Fallout 4 ModsWARNING: DO NOT REMOVE GAME FILES
Removing files from your installation directory can be risky and might result in having to reinstall the game. We recommend using Nexus Mod Manager to make the installation and removal of mods safer and easier.
Removal of loose files
Verify the files used by the mod you would like to remove by examining the original archive. Remove files you confirm to be used by the mod.
Be very careful about removing core game files that the mod may have over-written. Doing so may damage your game installation.
Removal of plugins
Removing plugins is somewhat safer than loose-files in that plugins are self-contained and will not affect the integrity of the game installation when removed.
Verify the files used by the mod you would like to remove by examining the original archive. Remove files you confirm to be used by the mod.
Deactivating Plugins
Plugins can be deactivated by modifying the plugins.txt file (as described in the installation process) and removing the line that references the plugin you wish to deactivate.
How to verify game integrity
Should you ever find yourself in need of repairing your game installation, Steam has a handy tool that will help:
In Steam, right-click the game title > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache
This will ensure that your game installation is valid and in working order, though this may disable / invalidate any mods that were installed before starting the process.

Go Home[edit]
In addition to getting you the inside scoop on Shawn from Codsworth, going home gets you access to a Grognak comic power-up on the kitchen counter and a You're Special stat boost underneath the changing table in Shaun’s bedroom.
Across the street you’ll find Crafting stations (where you can make new things and store your stuff).
The surrounding houses also contain several Safes with useful bits inside.

Grab a Fat Man and a Mini Nuke[edit]
It’s good to be prepared. Just east of Sanctuary is the Robotic Disposal Ground. You can find it here. It’s due west of the USAF Satellite Station Olivia past the crash site.
Perched outside the station is a deactivated robot, and atop a pile of junk behind him sits a Fat Man launcher.
Take the launcher, but remember it’s not much good without ammo. Head east to USAF Satellite Station Olivia. Behind a locked door on the first sublevel is a Mini Nuke. To reach it’ you’ll either have to hack the advanced terminal, or head deeper into the basement. There, you’ll find a case in the back room (the one with the roaches) prominently set on a stool. The key to the locked room is inside.
Pick Up the Corvega Storage Key and Laser Musket in Concord[edit]
It’s easy to miss, but after you head down to Concord and help out Preston, you’ll be left with a lot of dead Raiders in the streets. Search them all carefully. One carries a key that opens a locked door inside the Corvega auto plant.
The door is located on the lower floor past the main entrance on the manufacturing floor. There’s a guard turret next to it. Inside the cage is a nice cache of ammunition.
Also don’t miss the Laser Musket just outside the museum next to the dead Raider.
Grab Fusion Cores[edit]
Fusion Cores are absolutely necessary for getting anywhere in Power Armor. They’re a finite resource and should be used conservatively. There are several hidden within an easy walk of Sanctuary, and you can make a point of gathering them all.
The first core is hidden in this cave directly beneath the Red Rocket outside Sanctuary. The cave is protected by Molerats. You’ll find the core on the rightmost of the three branches after entering the cave, on the floor next to the ruined reactor. Grab it quick..this area is radioactive.
Another core is located in the basement of the Museum of Freedom in Concord south of the Red Rocket Truck Stop. It’s easy to get, just follow the collapsed floor at the bottom of the huge main stairwell in the big open room. The core is behind a fence, but an easy terminal hack will open it. Preston Garvey and the Minutemen are in the room above, and you can use the core to help them out and claim a suit of Power Armor for yourself.
You’ll find another core close to Sanctuary east of the town in the basement of the USAF Satellite Station Olivia dominated by the huge satellite dish. The core is located in the large open power room in the basement plugged into a base station.
Another very easy core is located near the robotic reclamation station near the satellite station. The core is located just outside the building, in a large green box next to the robotic body lounging outside the door.
A fifth core is easily accessible on a shelf in the larger of the two storage rooms behind the screen at the Starlight Drive-In.
A sixth core is hidden in the basement of Mystic Pines just south of Rotten Landfill. The core is located in the small basement behind a locked door.
Grab Some Spare Armor[edit]
In addition to the Power Armor you get for helping Preston in Concord, you’ll also be privy to a spare suit located in the woods near a crashed aircraft between USAF Satellite Station and the robotic reclamation plant east of Sanctuary.
The parts here can be stored and used alongside your main suit to bolster and repair, or repaired themselves to give you a spare suit.
Get Power Armor in 5 Minutes
Fallout 4 Quick Start Mod Mods
You can use one of your new cores to move the spare suit to Sanctuary or a base of your choice.
Store Your Big Guns[edit]
The Minigun you grab in Concord and the Fat Man are both heavy. You get weighed down quite a bit in Fallout, so drop them in your Workbench storage in Sanctuary for later use. This near-limitless storage area is always just a fast-travel away.
Doing this will allow you to store all of the good weapons you find throughout the game. If you don't want to lose a powerful weapon, store it and come back for it later. There will be plenty of other workbenches you'll find in locations throughout the Commonwealth, just remember where you store your favorite weapons.
Grab the Red Menace Mingame[edit]
The Recreation Terminal in Vault 111 is easy to spot, but early in the game you might not realize that you can take the game tape inside with you and play on the go.
After checking out Red Menace, be sure to grab the tape for gaming joy on the go.
